Senate Censure of the appalling treatment of  the President of the President of the Human Rights Commission

The Senate has censured Brandis for his appalling treatment of Gillian Triggs.

"Last week, Senator Brandis was subjected to heavy criticism from Australia's legal fraternity over his dealings with Professor Triggs.
The president of the Australian Bar Association, Fiona McLeod SC, said she had never seen an attack stoop to such a personal level, which appeared designed to distract from the detention inquiry. "

More of the same from Luke Hartsuyker - no response to conditions on Nauru
Mike' letter and the reply from Luke Hartsuyker are on the blog
"Yesterday I was utterly dismayed and horrified, but not at all surprised, to read  Professor David Isaacs'  and Alanna Maycock's account of their time on Nauru in December. We, the Australian people, get few insights into the disgraceful treatment meted out to asylum seekers in our name. We are deliberately kept in the dark, and for obvious political reasons. "
Extract from the article referred to
"Each family's tent adjoins the next. There is no privacy from neighbours and less from guards, who can enter tents unannounced any time.Only tents for children under five are air-conditioned; inside many of the tents is mouldy. Tents are 30 to 120 metres from the nearest washing and toilet facilities. Toilet trips at night involve crossing dark, open land, often under the gaze of large male guards. Many children and some mothers have had bed-wetting at night rather than run the gauntlet of a night-time toilet visit."
