letter from Peter Sobey - release children before Christmas

Date: Wed, Dec 2, 2015 at 8:44 AM
Subject: Christmas wishes
To: Luke Hartsuyker <Luke.Hartsuyker.MP@aph.gov.au>

Dear Mr Hartsuyker,

I understand that there will be a Migration and Maritime Powers Amendment Bill before parliament in the near future. I would hope that when it does that you will do the right thing and vote to release the children, and their families, from detention centres before Christmas.

I find it unfathomable that we, as a country, have children locked up in prison camps with no hope of release. No child, particularly one that has committed no crime, should be subjected to indefinite detention. I have heard all the arguments from your government that seek to justify your actions but it just doesn't wash. It is cruel and unusual punishment and, in the end, erodes respect for the rule of law.

You have an opportunity to pull back from this moral abyss this week. I sincerely hope that you will take the opportunity to release children from detention,

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Sobey
