Roadside demonstration : Thursday 13th July in Nambucca Heads: 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm

A reminder that our next roadside demonstration will take place this Thursday, 13th July in Nambucca Heads. You will find us in our usual spot beside the Pacific Highway adjacent to the Plaza shopping centre. It would be good to have a few more supporters to come to join us, so why not give it a go? We have lots of banners and placards to share.

Our next market stall: Bellingen, Saturday 15th July, from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm

Don’t forget that our next market stall is this coming Saturday in Bellingen from 9.00 am until 1.30 pm.  We have a petition to sign, leaflets to hand out and Boat People  merchandise to sell. All the profits from sales are donated to the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. The Bellingen market is very popular and offers  a great opportunity for us to promote the rights of asylum seekers and to counteract the fear mongering of the government and much of the media. If you can join us for an hour or two, then please let Mike know by emailing him at : mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com. New supporters would be most welcome.

Candlelit Vigil: Lavenders Bridge Park, Bellingen, Wednesday 19th July at 5.30 pm

It is now four years since the Rudd government announced that no asylum seekers arriving by boat would be resettled in Australia. Since that day, immense suffering has been inflicted on men, women and children, who have been cruelly used as a deterrent to others who might contemplate crossing the seas from Indonesia or elsewhere in search of safety. As a nation, we stand accused of failing in our international obligations, of ignoring the rights, enshrined in in international law, of people legitimately seeking asylum, and of treatment which amounts to torture. It is little wonder that the government is prepared to go to inordinate lengths to keep the truth about the treatment of asylum seekers out of the public gaze. The vigil which we are planning as part of a nationwide event, presents the opportunity to shine some light on this dark chapter in our history and to speak out for justice and humanity. Will you please therefore consider coming to join us for our vigil in Bellingen to show your solidarity and humanity?  Wrap up warm and bring a candle or a torch and you camera. A poster of the event is attached. Please print it off if you can and display it in your home, workplace, or local shopping centre. Let’s have a big crowd to send a clear message to the government that they do not inflict this cruelty in our name. We hope to see you there!

A final word from Leanne Torpey: coordinator, Global Campaign  to End Child Immigration Detention

“ The politics of hate is rising when compassion, love and understanding is most needed. Our challenge today is to shift the debate from fear to understanding...from fences to freedom.”

A message to the trolls.
