Roadside demonstration: Thursday 24th August in Toormina

A reminder that our next roadside demonstration is this Thursday  on Hogbin Drive in Toormina from 2.30 until 4.00 pm. You will find us near to the roundabout just down the hill from Sawtell Road, opposite what used to be the Sawtell Nursery. Please come and join us if you can, to show your solidarity for the asylum seekers and refugees who are still languishing in offshore detention in our name.

Our next market: Coffs Harbourside market: Sunday 27th August

A reminder that our next market stall will be at the Harbourside market in Coffs Harbour next Sunday, 27th August. If you can lend a hand between 9.00 am and 1.30 pm, then please let Mike know by email at: mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com.  As usual, we’ll be handing out leaflets, talking to market-goers, asking people to sign our petition and selling our merchandise.  We have some great new bumper stickers which will be on sale for $1.
You will find us at the market’s temporary location adjacent to the surf club car park near the mouth of Coffs Creek.

Donations to the Asylum Seekers Centre

Following our latest donation to the ASC, which brought our total for the year starting last August to $2,100, we received the following reply from Barbara Smith at the ASC:  “Wow, thank you so much for all your fundraising efforts – it really is appreciated. And congratulations on raising well above your targets. As you know, these donations will help to provide vital support services for people seeking asylum. I’m so pleased to hear that the Bellingen and Nambucca District RAR group have decided to continue your support for ASC over the next year.”

Federal MPs speak out for asylum seekers

During the past week, the Liberal MP Russell Broadbent and the Independent MP  Cathy McGowan have spoken out strongly in parliament against the government’s cruel and heartless asylum policy. In the parliament, Russell Broadbent stated that “It is time for this parliament to act to resolve the situation on Manus and Nauru.”  He later stated, outside the parliament, that: “Those who are genuine refugees should be brought home to Australia”. Cathy McGowan made a passionate speech in which she referred specifically to the members of the RAR group in her constituency who had continually brought the issues to her attention. She referred to the many letters and phone calls that she had received about the cruelty of the government’s policy, and felt that she had to speak out.
It is clear that public pressure on members of parliament can and does have an impact.
You might want to send an email to both of them to congratulate them on standing up for asylum seekers and refugees.
