1. HELP!
We are worried that, to date, we have received few offers of support for the planning and orgnisation of the Simon Tedeschi piano recital. Please get in touch with Mike Griffin at mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com or phone him on 6569 5419 if you can help. We want this to be a wonderful occasion for music lovers as well as a great fundraiser for ChilOut and the Refugee Advice and Casework Service. PLEASE consider offering your time either in the preparation for the event or assisting on the day.

These are now on sale at Helloworld Travel on Bowra Streeet, Nambucca Heads and at the Alternative Bookshop, 2/105, Hyde Street, Bellingen. Please buy your tickets soon! If you can’t get to either of the ticket outlets, then please phone Mike on 6569 5419 to order your ticket.

Illustrated talk on recent visit to middle east Palestinian refugees plight on Monday 16 May 2016 in Nambucca
The Nambucca Valley U3A has a long-running course entitled Philosophers' Cafe, run by Michael Blockey, who is an active RAR member. At its next meeting, on Monday 16th May, commencing at 10.00 am in the Small Hall of the Nambucca Community and Arts Centre, situated next to the library in Ridge Street, Mike Griffin will be giving an illustrated talk on his recent visit to the Middle East. Mike spent time in a refugee camp in Beirut, visited Hebron, East Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem and the Jordan Valley to see first hand how the Palestinian people survive in exile or under military occupation. RAR members are invited to attend the talk and join in the discussion. Entry is by gold coin donation to cover the cost of refreshments and rental.
Next Market stall at Bellingen Saturday 21 May 2016
Our next market stall will be at Bellingen market on Saturday 21st May. We are looking for volunteers to assist John and Mike between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm. If you can spare an hour or two, then please email Mike at mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com. As usual, we will be giving out information, selling our asylum seeker merchandise, collecting petitions and engaging with the public. A great time, as the election approaches, to promote a more principled, humane and lawful approach to our treatment of asylum seekers.
Where are the boats?
The evidence that the Border Force do not know where the asylum boats are, is strengthened by the arrival of a boat off the Cocos Islands. It is thought that the asylum seekers have been returned to Sri Lanka by charter flight and we know that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars.
It is worth re-reading Michael Blockey's letter included in last week's newsletter, which is attached to make that easier. Border Protection Force do eventually find the boats and send the people back to the country of origin .
Comments welcomed on the thought that if Border Protection Force do not know where the boats are, how can they say that no one is drowning at sea, and that the off shore detention centres are irrelevant as a deterrent .
Sievx Memorial in Canberra
In 2001 an asylum seeker boat sank with the loss of over 300 adults and children. There was much commentary that the authorities knew where the boat was, but did nothing.
The people of Bellingen were deeply involved in creating a memorial to mourn this event.
Photos of the memorial as at April 2016 are on the blog, with photos of the painted poles created by local schools and groups
