letter to Peter Dutton - show compassion

Subject: Please exercise compassion for asylum seekers

Dear Minister Dutton,
I have heard about your discussion on commercial radio, where you expressed your view that asylum seekers detained on Manus Island are having a nice time there.  I can only deduce that you have not read or heard or been advised of the deaths, sexual assault of women and children, and overall lack of security for those people.  These asylum seekers are, after all, the responsibility of your government and you in particular, as Minister.
I implore you to really examine what is happening, and not hide behind rhetoric about ‘economic refugees’ …. Yes, economics are involved, when your house has been blown up, your family members killed, and your livelihood destroyed.  How would you yourself deal with such catastrophe, other than fleeing in an attempt to find safety somewhere else.  Australia can absorb these people.  Show you have some compassion and ‘turn things around’ and let them come here.  This could go a long way towards restoring the credibility of your government, which looks set to lose office, the way things are going.
Sincerely,
Georgette Allen
