Manus and Nauru update
Roadside demonstration report
Another successful demonstration in Bellingen last Thursday,
with six supporters turning up to publicise the plight of asylum seekers and
refugees languishing in offshore detention. It is truly shocking that almost
all of these innocent people have now spent five years on Nauru or Manus. Our
next demonstration will be in Coffs Harbour, opposite the
Base hospital on Thursday 17th May from 2.30 to 4.00 pm. It
would be great to have a few more people coming along to support us, so do
consider joining us if you can.
Our next market : Bellingen, Saturday 19th
May from 9.00 am to 1.30 pm
We’ll be at Bellingen market on Saturday 19th May, handing
out leaflets, collecting signatures on our latest open letter and selling our
merchandise to support the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. You will find us
at site F20, which can be accessed from Ford Street. Please come along to
say hello and to sign the new open letter. If you can help out for an hour or
two, then please let Mike know by emailing him at: mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com.

Manus and Nauru update
On Sunday 29th April, 16 refugees (13 adults and 3 children)
left Nauru for resettlement in the US. This brings the number of people leaving
Nauru for the US to 155, whilst just 85 have left for the US from Manus.
Meanwhile, a further 23 refugees from Manus who were transferred to Port
Moresby in January to await resettlement in the US are still stuck
there, with no indication about why their resettlement has been delayed, or
when they might be flown out. No Iranians, Somalis or Sudanese refugees have been
accepted by the US. There are still well over 1500 refugees and asylum seekers
on Manus and Nauru, with no end in sight for them. Ian Rintoul, of the Refugee
Action Coalition, says: “It is time the government faced up to the failure of
offshore detention and the US resettlement deal. All the refugees and asylum
seekers should be brought to safety in Australia.”
It includes articles from many sources and letters to
politicians and newspapers.
