campaign
Bellingen market report
Our market stall in Bellingen on
Saturday was a huge success. We launched our new open letter to Prime Minister
Morrison, talked to a large number of market-goers, and collected donations for
the Asylum Seekers Centre. Visitors to our stall were only too happy to sign
our letter, which urges the government to immediately evacuate all the
children, men and women currently held on Nauru. We collected a record 390
signatures, which is a fantastic result, and offers yet more evidence, if any
were needed, that the Australian people want an end to the disastrous policy of
offshore detention. It is surely time for politicians to catch up with the
public mood, and to commit unreservedly to bringing this shameful chapter in
our history to an end.
We were delighted to sign up a
number of new supporters to add to the 600+ people who currently receive our
weekly newsletter.
Our markets for the remainder of
2018 are:
Saturday 6th October:
Valla Beach
Sunday 21st October:
Coffs Harbour
Saturday 17th November:
Bellingen
Saturday 1st December:
Valla Beach
Roadside demonstration: Thursday 20th
September, Toormina
A reminder that our next
fortnightly roadside demonstration is this Thursday, from 2.30 to 4.00 pm on
Hogbin Drive, Toormina. You will find us in our usual spot, about 100 metres
down the hill from the fire station, in the direction of the airport. Do come
and join us if you can, and help us to keep the issue of offshore detention in
the public eye. We have lots of banners and placards to share.
That diary date! Sunday 14th
October, from 11.00 am
We do hope that many of you will
have put the date in your diary for our meeting/lunch and fundraising auction
on 14th October to be held in Valla Beach.
The plan is to hold a meeting from
11.00 am, followed by some special music (details in next week’s newsletter),
then lunch on the deck, followed by the auction to raise funds for the Asylum
Seekers Centre. We hope to raise $1,000, but we can only do that if we have
lots of people attending, and we have plenty of items to auction. If you don’t
wish to attend the meeting, but want to come for the music, lunch and auction,
that’s fine. The meeting will last no more than an hour. Please bring a plate
to share. Drinks will be provided. Your friends and family will be most welcome
to join us.
If you have any items for the
auction, please let Mike know by emailing him at: mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com. or
phone him on 6569 5419. At our two previous auctions, a huge range of items
went under the hammer, ranging from wine, works of art, ornaments, pottery,
bird boxes, an antique silver and leather hip flask, Airbnb accommodation and
much besides. So please, get looking and try to find something to support this
very worthy charity.
Let’s get children off Nauru
campaign
It’s clear, from correspondence
with our national RAR committee, that our campaign to get children out of
detention is gathering pace. Many RAR groups and individual members are busy
writing to politicians. Please consider writing to our political leaders if you
haven’t already done so. Details of what you might want to include in letters
or emails were set out in last week’s newsletter, which you can access on our
blog. You will also find there a series of short letters provided by the Cairns
RAR group, which you might want to use. The more correspondence that
politicians receive on this issue, the more pressure they will be under to
respond to the public mood.
If you do manage to write a letter
or email, it would be really helpful if you could send it to us at: bellingen.rar@gmail.com. for
publication on our blog.
It includes articles from many
sources and letters to politicians and newspapers.
