Thursday Picket of Luke Hartsuker MP's office 6 August 2015
Don't forget our Thursday Picket outside Luke Hartsuyker's office every Thursday between 10am and Noon. Bring a placard and join our dedicated team sending a message to our government.
We seek to keep the pressure up on the government over their horrendous policy.
Luke's office is at 39 Little St Coffs Harbour. We hope to make this a weekly event. Coffs Growers market is on at the same time so give our MP a message and then go and support our local producers.
Next Market stall is at Bellingen on Saturday 15 August 2015
We are continuing organising stalls by rotation at the Markets at Valla Beach, Coffs Harbour Jetty and Bellingen.
It’s a great opportunity to meet people and to show solidarity for the plight of asylum seekers, especially those held in indefinite detention on the mainland or on Manus or Nauru. We will be handing out information sheets, collecting signatures for our petition and we will be a strong visual presence. Politicians need to understand that we will not be silenced and that we will continue to advocate peacefully and steadfastly for the just and humane treatment of asylum seekers.
So if you can spare an hour or two to join us on 1st August, please email Mike at:
mandm.griffin2@bigpond.com or phone him on 6569 5419.
Report on Valla Beach Markets Saturday 1 August 2015
A big thanks to over a dozen volunteers that turned up to Valla Markets for our RAR stall. Interest remains strong and as usual many people signed our new petition. Our new petition calls on opposition leader Bill Shorten to stop supporting Tony Abbott's inhumane policies and calls on the ALP to close Nauru and Manus. People expressed disgust with the current policies and the ALP's decision to include boat turn backs as part as their policy on asylum seekers.
Chilout Newsletter for July 2015
The latest newsletter from Chilout has arrived and can be read in full on the blog under the Chilout tab or click below
They report
Number of Children Still in Detention
- 127 children in immigration detention facilities within the Australian mainland; and
- 88 children in immigration detention facilities in Nauru.
Despite the Government’s promise to release children by the early months of this 2015, the number of children in detention has virtually remained stagnant for the past four months. Many of these children have been held in detention for years and, appallingly, it was recently reported that one child has been in detention for 1,113 days.
Guardian article - Manus Island rejected asylum seekers to be deported by PNG
There can be no more cruel decision than this for people who have been locked up on Manus Island for 2 years.
