United Nations High Commission for Refugees: Bello Brunch, 20th June 2016
A reminder that on World Refugee Day, 20th June, there will be a very special brunch at the Old Butter Factory Cafe in Bellingen, starting at 11.00 am.
There is a wide choice of menu, including vegetarian and vegan, and
there will be a performance of songs by Akabella. In addition, two of
our members will each give a five-minute presentation. John will talk
about our work as a local RAR group and Mike will talk about his recent
visit to Bourj al-Barajneh Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut.
Tickets
are $40, which includes a $15 tax-deductable donation to UNHCR, and
they are available at the Old Butter Factory and the Alternatives
Bookshop in Bellingen. If you cannot get to either of these locations,
then please text Rosemary on 0432 181 474.

Next Market Stall
Our
next market stall will be at the Coffs Harbourside market on Sunday
26th June. As usual, we will have a petition to sign, information
leaflets to hand out and lots of asylum seeker merchandise to sell. The
markets are a great way for getting our message out there for a more
humane, compassionate and lawful asylum policy. We want to encourage the
public to make it clear to our prospective parliamentarians that they
do not support the current cruel policy of detaining people
indefinitely in remote parts of the world, where the government wants
them to be out of sight and out of mind .
Simon Tedeschi Recital
The recital by Simon Tedeschi on Sunday was
a huge success. We had a sell-out crowd at the Nambucca Community and
Arts Centre for what was a an afternoon of wonderful music. We are
hugely grateful to Simon for waiving his fee in order to enable us to
raise funds for ChilOut and RACS (the Refugee Advice and Casework
Service). As a result, we are able to donate $2,000 each to our two
chosen refugee charities, and to have a surplus of $881 to help fund our
post-election campaigning on behalf of asylum seekers and refugees. In
addition, our RAR stall sold in excess of $300 worth of tea towels,
bags, T shirts and bumper stickers, all of which serves to raise public
awareness.
A great team effort on the part of a dedicated team of our supporters, and an excellent outcome in every way.
